ACT Policy Implementation
Learning from Zambia's Experience in Introducing ACTs

Geneva, 2005
In 2002 the Zambian health authorities have adopted artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT), artemether-lumefantrine, as the first line drug for the management of uncomplicated malaria. The process of policy change and moving from policy to practice has involved substantial managerial skills to overcome expected and unexpected bottlnecks over a period of 4-5 years. Caesar Mudondo, Pascalina Chanda, Micky Ndhlovu, and Pauline Wamulume have documented this unique experience and want to share the Zambian "practice"p with other countries as they attempt to implement new ACT policy. The Zambian authors hope that transferring this "pbest practice report"p to countries intending to engage in similar processes will enhance their ability to deal with the challenge.

Community Involvement in Rolling Back Malaria
WHO/CDS/RBM/2002.42
2002
RBM Partnership, WHO, UNICEF, World Bank, UNDP

Evidence shows that RBM community-based health programmes are already very effective. The objectives of making significant reductions in malaria levels can only be met by concerted actions built upon well-designed and thorough programmes. However, there is still a need for support and cooperation in the development of these programmes, and partnerships must be strongly committed in order to ensure that goals are achieved. Community participation and empowerment are central to the success of RBM programmes and the fulfilment of its objectives.

Reducing the impact of malaria on child health, development and survival
RBM Briefing Document
WHO/CDS/RBM/2002.38
2002
RBM Partnership, WHO

Malaria still kills an unacceptable number of African children each year, and blights the life of many millions more. Recent scientific advances now make it possible to dramatically reduce this burden. It will require an enormous financial, technical, and political commitment to reduce the number of childhood malaria deaths in Africa from the current level of one every 30 seconds to one every minute. At the start of the 21st century, there is unprecedented political momentum to carry this challenge forward. It will be well worth the effort.
